Senior Choir

The Choir of St Michael and All Angels has been at the centre of worship since the church was founded in 1898, maintaining an unbroken tradition of choral excellence that continues to this day. As one of the few remaining robed choirs in Southampton, it sings at the weekly Choral Eucharist and twice-monthly Evensongs, as well as at major festivals and civic occasions. The choir’s repertoire, now exceeding 1,000 pieces, ranges from Tudor anthems to contemporary works, all enriching the parish’s vibrant worship life.

Both choral and organ scholarships are available.

During the pandemic, choir members faithfully recorded hymns and anthems for online services, helping to sustain the parish’s musical presence — their recordings still attract thousands of views each month on the NSAB YouTube Channel.

Recordings of the Choir are also available as a playlist on Soundcloud.

Join the Choir!

To try out the senior choir, simply come along to the next convenient choir practice!  They are every Wednesday at 7.30 to 9pm (except after Christmas and Easter, and in the summer holidays). To let us know you’re coming, you can email us at: music@nsab.org.uk

Alternatively visit one of our services and have a chat! We are always keen to hear from potential new members. Singing great music, mixing socially, with the occasional cathedral visit thrown in, is fun, challenging and immensely rewarding. Come along and see if it might be for you.

Junior Choir

Our Junior Choir gives children and young people the chance to grow in confidence, faith, and musical skill.

Open to all from Year 3 upwards, the choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings in term time and sings at the monthly all-age Eucharist and other special services throughout the year.

Members follow the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice for Life scheme, gaining practical training in singing and music theory within a fun, encouraging environment.

The Junior Choir also enjoys an active social calendar, with half-term Singing Days, cathedral visits, and informal concerts bringing families together.

In keeping with our parish’s inclusive approach, children are encouraged to participate fully in worship — from preparing the altar to helping lead music.

Half Term Singing Days

Join us this half-term!

Our next Singing Event is on 29th October 2025, (the Wednesday of half term). Children in years 3 to 5 (ages 7 to 10) are invited to register. The day will be led by the leaders of our Junior Choir Rebecca Aspin and Paul Kuzan, along with members of St Michael’s senior and junior choirs.

Watch our 2-minute video here to find out more!

You don’t need any singing experience to take part, there’s no need to read music and no commitment beyond the day itself. All you need is a voice!

On most half-terms, we organise events for singing, games and other activities for children in years 3 and above organised by experienced and friendly adults. Typically the time involves singing, games, and fun! We learn new music together and create our own performance to perform to family and friends and the end of the day.

Watch this video from a previous Singing Day of the choir singing “When you believe” from the animated feature film, “Prince of Egypt”.

All are welcome – no musical experience is necessary.
Cost is £5 per child.

Director of Music

Andrew Hanley

Andrew Hanley studied music at Bristol University, specialising in 17th-century English music and organ performance. As an academic his work has been included in several publications, including Dictionary of National Biography and New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. For his MA (Mus) he specialised in the music of a rather obscure 17th-century English composer, Richard Mico.

Andrew has been a church organist since the age of 14, and has been director of music in churches for many years, in London, Tunbridge Wells, Salisbury, and now Southampton. By profession, he is a music publisher, currently managing the editorial team at Edition Peters in London – before this he worked for the music publishers Boosey & Hawkes.

Andrew lives in Salisbury, with his wife Sara-Lois Cunningham (a soprano and singing teacher who has a private teaching practice and is former head of vocal studies at the London College of Music Junior College), and children Elizabeth (a former chorister at Wells Cathedral and an oboist) and Edward (a pianist, drummer and recorder player).

The Organs

St. Michael & All Angels'

The organ is a two manual instrument built by Rushworth and Dreaper in 1937, and is a fine example of their work of that period. It consists of four ranks, totally enclosed in two expression chambers on the north side of the choir. (Ranks A&B in one box, C&D in the second.) The ranks are used by extension to form 26 stops. The organ was refurbished by Geoff Griffiths & Co. in 2011.

More detail can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register.

St. Nicolas'

The organ is a single manual instrument of eleven stops, build by Positive Organ Co around 1935.

A specification is available on the National Pipe Organ Register
